What is Vishnu Shraddha?

Vishnu Shraddha is a special Vedic ritual performed to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu for the peace and salvation (Moksha) of ancestors (Pitru). This Shraddha is primarily performed for those souls who are dissatisfied or have not received proper Tarpan (ritual offerings) and Pind Daan (ancestral offerings).

It is especially performed during Pitru Paksha, Amavasya (New Moon), and Gaya Shraddha. Through the remembrance and worship of Lord Vishnu, prayers are offered to grant salvation to the departed souls. It is believed that offerings made through Lord Vishnu directly reach the ancestors and satisfy their souls.

Why is Vishnu Shraddha Necessary?

  • If there has been an untimely death in the family.
  • If there is Pitru Dosh (ancestral curse) in the birth chart (Kundli).
  • If there are obstacles in childbirth or fertility issues.
  • If the family is facing financial, mental, or personal problems.
  • If ancestors are appearing in dreams, indicating their dissatisfaction due to improper ancestral rites.

Benefits of Performing Vishnu Shraddha:

  • Peace and Salvation for Ancestors:
With the blessings of Lord Vishnu, ancestors can attain Vaikuntha Dham (the divine abode of Lord Vishnu).

  • Relief from Pitru Dosh:
The ritual is highly effective for individuals suffering from Pitru Dosh as indicated in their horoscope.

  • Blessings for Childbirth:
It helps couples overcome obstacles in conception and grants them the blessing of children.

  • Resolution of Financial Problems:
The ritual helps to remove obstacles causing financial losses and attracts prosperity and abundance.

  • Family Harmony and Mental Peace:
It brings positive energy to the home, removes negative influences, and restores peace and harmony in the family.

  • Removes Delays in Marriage:
If someone is facing continuous obstacles or delays in marriage, performing this Shraddha can resolve them.

  • Removes Unknown Fears and Misfortunes:
If life is plagued with constant problems, setbacks, and misfortunes, Vishnu Shraddha helps remove these obstacles.

Procedure of Vishnu Shraddha:

  1. Ganesh Puja:
The ritual begins with the worship of Lord Ganesha, seeking his blessings to remove obstacles and ensure the success of the ritual.

  2. Pitru Tarpan and Pind Daan:
Offerings (Tarpan) are made with water, sesame seeds (Til), and other sacred materials to satisfy the ancestors and guide them towards liberation.

  3. Worship of Lord Vishnu:
Mantra chanting and recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama (thousand names of Lord Vishnu) are performed.

  4. Pind Daan at Sacred Sites:
If possible, performing Pind Daan at places like Gaya, Prayagraj, or Haridwar is considered highly fruitful.

  5. Havan (Fire Ritual):
A Havan (sacred fire ritual) is performed, offering ghee, sesame seeds, and sacred herbs into the fire while chanting specific Vedic mantras.

  6. Brahmin Feeding and Charity:
The ritual concludes with the offering of food and donations (such as clothes, grains, and utensils) to Brahmins and the needy, as it is believed that serving them is equivalent to serving one’s ancestors.

Auspicious Time for Vishnu Shraddha:

  • Pitru Paksha (Shraddha fortnight): The most sacred period dedicated to ancestral offerings.
  • Amavasya (New Moon Day): Considered highly powerful for connecting with and satisfying the souls of ancestors.
  • Surya Sankranti (Solar Transition Days): Significant cosmic days for performing ancestral rites.
  • Thursday and Ekadashi: Especially beneficial as Thursday is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and Ekadashi is his most sacred day.
  • Sacred Locations:
    • Gaya (Bihar) – Most revered for Pind Daan.
    • Kashi (Varanasi) – The city of salvation.
